So what is an Avatar and why is it so important to have one? An Avatar is the person that you are trying to help. You need to know who you are helping in order to provide them the product or service that you provide.

By having a person in mind before you put your marketing message out helps you to understand their very real wants and desires.

One of the biggest problems marketers and bloggers make is that they try to help everyone. I’ve even heard it said before that if they have skin and breath they are your target market. While it may be true that anyone and everyone COULD be your customer it doesn’t mean that is the best way to market to them.

Think of it this way…..if you have a foot problem, you wouldn’t go see the heart doctor. You would want to go to the foot doctor because he would understand your problem better. He has been trained in foot care and can get you the help that you need. He can solve your pain.

The first thing that you want to do is give her name. This will help you connect with her. Get as detailed as you can. The more details that you have the easier it will be to talk to her and understand her pain. You will be able to give her the solutions that she’s looking for. Have you ever felt that an ad was speaking directly to you? That is because the advertisers were using an avatar that closely resembled women just like you.

The second thing that you want to do is dig deep into what she sees, feels, hears, what is in her heart, what are her true desires. What does she worry about? What are her passions?

Why You Need an Avatar

Don’t get caught up in making her perfect. Know that she is likely to change. You can allow yourself the freedom to come up with an avatar for now. If she needs to change in the future, that is ok. Just make up something for now and get started. Marketing is all about testing and you are going to be constantly testing your market to see if she is the right fit. That is the beauty if making her up. You can change her in an instant.

Now that you have your avatar, you can begin to do research on your target market. This is how you will find your Niche Market. Again, don’t stress out about this….turn it into a game and see what works and what doesn’t. The important thing here is to start.

Having an avatar will help you really connect with your audience on a deeper level.
