How Much Transparency Is Too Much?

TrancparencyWe’ve talked before about telling stories and being authentic, and how being your true self is your most powerful branding tactic there is. But just how open and honest should you be when it comes to sharing your story?

I am often surprised at what some people share online.  I love hearing about other people's lives, but sometimes it like TMI! (Too Much Information)  Always remember and think about how your story is going to be received by your audience.

Pat Flynn and Jon Lee Dumas are notorious for their transparency, even going so far as to post their monthly income statements. You might argue that when you’re making the kind of money they do (6+ figures each month) it’s easy to share—perhaps even inspirational to your audience. But it might also be off-putting to some, since talking about money is often seen as bragging. In this case, though, it works in their favor to attract the exact audience that they are after. The others who don't like that kind of information will find different mentors, and that is, after all, the point of marketing.

Transparency comes in other forms as well. Struggles with alcoholism, depression, cancer and other health concerns are commonly shared. Stories of marriage and relationship triumphs (and tragedies) are told. Even spats between competing businesses aren’t off limits for some marketers.

That doesn’t mean, though, that you have to be frank and honest about all areas of your life and business. With a little forethought and planning, you can keep certain aspects of your story private.

Watch Your Social Media Profiles

Here’s where a lot of business owners falter, especially when it comes to Facebook. You have your personal profile, to which you invite friends and family, and your business page, where you talk, well, business.

But there will inevitably be some overlap. Colleagues will slowly filter into your personal timeline, and you into theirs. Pretty soon, your business people are hearing all about your latest bout with the flu and that snarky thing your mother in law said yesterday. Too much? Maybe.

When it comes to your social media sharing, it’s important to pay close attention to not only what you say, but who you’re saying it to. Using privacy settings, contact lists, and even limiting who you “friend” can help maintain your privacy while still being transparent about your business offerings.

Remember, the Internet is Forever

While privacy settings can help, a better way to keep your personal business away from prying eyes is to simply not post it at all. Think of every blog post, Tweet, Facebook status update and Instagram pic as a billboard. If you wouldn’t post it on the side of the highway for all who pass to read it, don’t put it online either. The chance that it will “leak” (despite your best efforts) is great, and once it’s out there, you will not ever get it back.

So think twice about those nasty replies, intimate details, and other confidential information. You just never know who might be reading, and they will affect your brand image.

The bottom line? Know your audience and know yourself. If you’re not comfortable sharing certain aspects of your life and business, chances are they won’t be comfortable hearing about it, either. It’s okay to maintain some privacy, even in this transparent world of online marketing.

12 Ideas for List Building FreebiesYou probably know that giving away something of value is a great way to build your list quickly. Coming up with the ideas of list building freebies can be tricky though. Here is a list of proven list build freebies that you can use to help you brainstorm.

1. Make a simple PDF that would be of interest to your target market. Word, OpenOffice and most other popular word processors have a “save as PDF” option. By saving your text into PDF format it protects your work.

2. Use a screen capture software such as Jing, Camtasia or Screencast-O-Matic to record a video of your screen. Videos are a great way to share how-to-videos.

3. Record your voice into an MP3 file. Podcasts are growing lately as more and more people are listening to content versus reading or watching it.

4. Create a buyer's guide, walking someone through every step of a particular buying or shopping process.

5. You could offer a valuable coupon for one of your products.

6. Create a short 5 or 7-day email course that solves a problem that your target market has.

7. Give away a free preview to your eBook or product. By giving away a part of your product you will entice your new list member to purchase the complete product.

8. Checklists are simple to create and people love them!

9. Do a video review of a product or service. Show yourself using the product. Include your affiliate link, and your may just make a sale as well as gain a new list member.

10. Give away a free consultation. This allows you to talk with your new list member and see exactly how you can help them.

11. Interview an expert in your field and give away the recording.

12. Access to a training webinar or teleseminar. People are looking for help and webinars offer great value.

Home Business or Work-at-Home Job – Which Is Right for You?

Home Business or Work-at-Home Job There are many reasons you may want to work from home.  Maybe you just had a child and want more work-life balance, or perhaps you are close to retiring and looking to add some extra income to your monthly budget.  It could be that you have an illness that makes it difficult for you to get out of the house. Or maybe you just like being home and want the freedom to work your own way.

Whatever the reasons you want to work at home, you’ll need to choose whether or not you want a job from home, or you want a business from home. Here are eight questions to help you decide.

  1. Are You Self-Motivated?

If you want your own business so that you can set your own hours, you will need to be very self-motivated. You’ll need to take time out of your day for marketing, interviewing clients, closing the deal and then doing the work too. You’ll be 100 percent responsible for delivering the work, billing and collecting. You’ll even be responsible for deciding the methods you’ll use to do the work. To do that you’ll need to be a very self-motivated individual.

  1. What Skills Do You Have?

Take a out a piece of paper and write down a list of the skills you currently have.  What do you love to do? Can any of these translate into a business? Label them as “Job from Home” or “Home Business”.  Do any of these translate into common work-from-home positions such as call center agent or transcriptionist? Some skills may cross over into both.  Look over the list and see what resonates with you.  What brings you the most Joy?

  1. What Sort of Lifestyle Do You Want?

woman-791185_1920Do you want your day to be scheduled for you or do you want to have control over your schedule?  With a work-at-home job your time is often set by the company and you have to “show up” at your scheduled time.  On the other hand, if you have your own home business you can set your own schedule and work in the nook and crannies of your day.

  1. Do You Already Have a Business Idea?

If you have already researched a business idea, and feel as if you want to do that instead of working for someone else, can you pull it off? What steps do you need to take to make it a reality? Are you the type of person who is able to organize and take the steps needed to get your business off the ground? Can you find and afford help if you’re not sure what to do to get the business going? Does the thought of all this stress you out?

  1. How Do You Feel about Punching a Clock?

For some people the idea of clock punching is relaxing, for others, it feels like a nightmare. Neither feeling is right or wrong as it takes all types of people to make this world work. If you know up front that you are fine with punching a clock and you’d rather someone else tell you when to be someplace and what to do, then a work-at-home job is best for you. If that feels like prison to you, then a business is probably better if you can do what it takes to get it going.

  1. Do You Have Money to Start a Business?

Starting any type of business, even an online business, requires an investment not only of time, but also of money. Have you worked out a business plan and do you know how much money you need to get started? Do you have that money available? If not, do you have a way to get it? Perhaps working at a job first, while you work on your business on the side, is the way to go if you don’t have the funds to start.

  1. Do You Need Training and Education?

Whichever way you decide to go, you may need some training and education in order to perform the tasks at hand.  Decide if you want to invest in the training yourself to get your business off the ground, or if you would prefer to find a work-at-home job where they will train you from the ground up.  Keep in mind that most work at home jobs are paid by the hour.

  1. What Is Your Biggest Dream for Your Life?

When you think of the future, what do you see?  Do you see yourself working for someone else and collecting a weekly or bi-weekly check?  Or do you see yourself as a business owner who is charge of every aspect of your life.  Again, there is no right or wrong answer, it is totally up to you.  Dream BIG!   What do you want?

What’s In A Brand?

Have you heard people talking about their brand?  Do you know what they mean by that?  Why is having a brand so important?

 Your brand defines who you are and what you do, while also setting you apart from others like you. It emphasizes the unique value that you offer your customers. It's the reason they buy from you and not from someone else. Your brand is communicated through everything your company does, from its design motifs and logo to the products, services and promotions it offers.

 Who Is Your Company?

 In order to formulate your brand, you have to see how your company is viewed by the public. Who do they see you as? What are your values as they perceive them?

It's useful to think in terms of personal characteristics, even if you're considering the personality of a company. Just like a person, a company can be brash and bold, or it can be gentle and unassuming. It can be smart, strong, athletic, youthful or conservative. If your company were a person, who would it be?

 Know Your Customers

The most important part of developing your brand is getting to know your customers. Brands don't actually exist in the objective world. They exist inside the minds of customers. So, you need to get inside your customers' heads and understand what they think and how they feel about you.

 You need to understand the demographic you cater to, as well as psychological factors such as how they see themselves and how they think about money. You should know their buying habits, which brands they buy from, and how they feel about these brands.

 Consistency Is Key

 A good brand is consistent. The public should get the same message every time they come into contact with you. Consistency is especially important online where you have many more touch points with your market than offline. Image plays a bigger part online, so consistency across all media is key.

 Your brand should also provide a seamless user experience. The user experience should be in harmony with the image your brand projects. Apple is a company that does this well. Their brand communicates that they produce the trendiest, high tech products that improve our lives, and that are clean, simple and easy to use. Their marketing, their products, and their customer service all strive to communicate this message.

 All in the Mind

Always remember that brand is in your customers' mind, not in the real world. It's not necessarily something about your company, but what your market perceives it to be. Aim to make associations in people's minds with your company.

 This is why people pay so much money for Swiss watches, even today when we all have cell phones that tell time for us. There is still something about a Swiss watch in the buyer's mind that conveys much more than a timepiece. It communicates luxury, craftsmanship, and even the culture and history behind the Swiss watch. This is its brand.

What Is a Target Market?

If you are online trying to market your business, you've probably heard….”You need to know your target market”.   But, what does that mean?

A target market is a group of people that all want the same thing or are all interested in the same thing.  They all have the same problem and they all have similar characteristics and needs.  It is a very specific group of people who are looking for your products or solutions that you offer.

The goal of your marketing efforts will be to connect with these people and help them solve their problems.  If you don’t know who they are and what their needs are, it's going to be very hard to offer them solutions.

What Is a Target Market?  Explained

A target market is defined by demographics such as gender, age, economic group, location, family situation, social status, country and language.  Below I have listed some examples of businesses with target markets:

A store that targets working moms under 40

A resort that targets retirees

A store whose target market is young families

A winter sporting goods supply store that targets people in cold, northern areas

A blog that targets moms

Another important aspect of target marketing is understanding how your market see themselves or how they view the world around them.

Why You Want a Narrow Market

The more narrow that you can make your market, the better.  You don't want your market so broad that you never really connect with anyone.  By making a smaller market you will really get to know them and understand them.  You will be able to talk to them in a language that they can understand.

If your target market is moms of teenagers, you don't want to be talking about pre-school and diapers.  Your message would get lost and no one will be listening to you.  They won't understand where you are going with your market and they will tune you out.

Benefits and Solutions

The key to marketing successfully is to know your market's problem or pain and to offer them a solution.  If you really understand who they are and what their needs are, then you can communicate your products to them in such a way that they will understand how your products will help them.

An added benefit of creating a target market is that your market can relate to each other.  They all have the same problem and are all looking for answers, you can create a community that will help and support each other and will look to you for answers.  You can support this group through, social media, forums and blogs.

When coming up with your target market, be careful that you don't make assumptions.  Marketing is a science and you need to do some research.  You can even give your target market a survey and ask them what it is that they want from you.
