Ok so, you've decided that you want to start a home based business.  That's awesome!  You are now entering into the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship.  Don't worry about feeling that there's too much to learn.  You can learn as you go.  Just think of how exciting it will be to know that you are in charge and that you will have the flexibility that you've been wanting.  There is nothing better than being your own boss.

So now that you've made the leap to start your own business, what do you do now?  You're probably wondering how to get it off on the right foot and how to have the strongest possible start.  Well, these 7 steps will help:

  1. Set up a special workspace in your home.  It doesn't matter where it is, the important thing is to have a place that you can call you own.  You will want a place to keep all of your important papers and your supplies.  If you have to wander around the house every time you want to work, it will make it harder on you and you run the risk of not working at all.  So set aside a special work area.
  1. Place everything that you will need close by.  This sounds obvious, but you would be surprised by how many people do not do this step and are constantly searching for their supplies.  This will save you so much time and will help you to be more productive.
  1. Your third step is to decide what days and times you are going to work.  If you skip this step you will be amazed at how fast the week goes and when Friday comes you haven’t accomplished anything.  But, if you take the time now to schedule out your work times you will be sure to allow enough time to complete your tasks.  Think about how much computer time you will need and if you have customer service errands that you will need to run.  What day will you place your orders for products?  Will your customers come to your house or will you meet them somewhere else?
  1. Be sure to balance action with planning.  Sometimes people find themselves planning and planning but never taking any action.  It is important to plan your actions and then DO the actions.  A great approach is to plan your next couple of goals and then work backwards to create a step by step plan of action.  Once your plan is set, then it's time to take action.
  1. A very important part of having a business is to let people know about it.  People can't buy from you if they don't know what you are selling.  Join some of your local networking clubs and be sure to talk to everyone you know to let them know what you are doing.
  1. Present yourself in a professional light.  If you want to be treated professionally, then you need to present a professional image.  Set up a separate bank account for your business.  Get a separate phone line.  Make professional marketing materials.  Be someone that you would want to do business with.
  1. Put your business on auto-pilot as much as you can.  Think about your business in a couple of years from now.  You may be able to run the whole show now, but what happens as your business grows and you simply don't have time to do it all yourself.  It's best to set up things to run automatically right from the start.  This will free up your time to do their important things that will bring you more money.

These seven tips will help you get started (and growing) in the right direction.
